Sheena Brown

Mascara is my number one beauty product. My beauty bae, if you will. If I could only bring three things to a desert island, mascara would absolutely make the cut—right next to ChapStick and sunscreen. (And yes, I know what you’re thinking: I’d do amazingly on "Naked & Afraid.")
That said, I have a complicated relationship with mascara. I’m incredibly picky. I’ve swiped left on dozens of tubes over the years to find my current rotation, and while most formulas are marketed for volume or length, I want it all. So be warned going in: My expectations (like our standards, ladies) are high. Picking a favorite mascara is a lot like picking a partner or a pair of jeans—deeply personal, occasionally frustrating, and when you finally find the one…you commit.
Part of the challenge? I live in a very dry climate, which means I have to work harder for that length-plus-volume match made in beauty heaven. When I travel somewhere humid, I’m fascinated by how my lashes suddenly transform into full Disney-princess territory. Extensions? No. These baddies are courtesy of Mother Nature. (And that’s pretty much the only thing I enjoy about humidity.) Back home, though, achieving that same lifted, defined, fanned-out effect takes a little more work—and a very good mascara.
So when I heard I’d be testing the YSL Lash Clash Extreme Volume Mascara, I was equal parts intrigued and cautiously optimistic. A big brush? Extreme volume? Luxury lash drama? We love the ambition. And if you’re an IPSY Original subscriber, there’s a chance you could see a deluxe sample of this mascara in your April bag—so naturally, I took my testing responsibilities very seriously.
It's about glam time you treated yourself.

From YSL Beauty’s perspective, this mascara is designed for unapologetic lash drama. Think “ultra-intense” pigment, bold volume, and a brush that’s unapologetically oversized. In other words, it’s aimed squarely at people who want their lashes to make a statement—whether you’re going for soft impact or full glam. The formula is also fragrance-free and paraben-free, and the brand promises smudge-proof wear for up to 24 hours.
The formula is buildable and deeply black, while the dense, oversized brush loads lashes with product quickly to create that plush, high-impact look. (More on how it compared to my usual mascaras in a minute.)
At a Glance:
Claims: Extreme volume (up to 200% more) with “ultra-intense” black pigment
Brush: Oversized, dense bristles designed to coat every lash from root to tip
Formula: Buildable, fragrance-free, and paraben-free
Best for: Volume lovers who want noticeably fuller lashes that still look natural

My lashes after applying the YSL Lash Clash Mascara.
Call me the Miranda Priestly of mascara judgment, but before we get into results, it’s only fair to introduce the competition. My current mascara rotation includes icons like Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara (yes, I’ll tolerate the flakes because it’s that good), Hourglass Unlocked Instant Extensions Mascara (the tubing formula that made me a believer), and my newest obsession, Kulfi Badi Lash Mascara, which I discovered thanks to my IPSY box.
So the bar was high.
My first impression of Lash Clash: That brush is not here to play. I love a fluffy wand that grabs every lash for big, soft, fluttery definition—no crunch, no smudging, no lash casualties at removal.
One coat: My lashes looked thicker and darker, especially at the base. Think fuller, plush lashes with a soft glam effect—like your natural lashes, but upgraded.
Two coats: This is where things started getting interesting. More volume and my lashes fanned out in that fluffy, editorial way that mascara ads always promise but rarely deliver.
Two-plus coats: Now we’re in drama territory. The lashes looked bold and lifted with that plush “luxury lash” effect—full without tipping into crunchy or spidery territory.
One small surprise: The pigment is definitely deep black, but not quite as intensely inky-black as I expected based on the name. It still delivers strong definition, but if you’re someone who lives for that ultra-jet-black, lacquered look, you might notice the difference.
What pleasantly surprised me was how buildable the formula felt. Some volumizing mascaras get clumpy the second you go back for another coat. This one lets you gradually build up to your desired level of drama without lash overload.
Does it beat my longtime favorites on every front? Not quite. My ride-or-dies still have an edge when it comes to length, color, and lifting power.
But when it comes to instant volume and that plush luxury-lash aesthetic, Lash Clash absolutely delivers on its promise.

Applying the YSL Lash Clash Mascara.
Mascara is the one step in my routine I absolutely refuse to rush. In fact, I developed a reputation in college for it. If my roommates asked my ETA before we went out and I said, “I just have to do my mascara,” they originally assumed that meant five minutes. Eventually they learned it actually meant closer to 15–20.
I wish I were kidding.
But here’s the thing: My lashes are naturally very light—like do not match my hair color light. Without mascara, I regularly get asked if I’m feeling okay (again, I wish I were kidding). So yes, I take my mascara application seriously. A mascara ritual, if you will. A little mascara meditation, while I listen to a favorite podcast. It’s the most important step in my routine, because it really opens up your eyes—the windows to the soul, as my buddy William Shakespeare once said.
Here’s how I applied Lash Clash:
Curled my lashes first (non-negotiable)
Used a wiggle-at-the-root, then sweep-upward motion to load volume at the base
Applied mascara one eye at a time to control buildup
Used horizontal swipes for my top lashes, then turned the brush vertically to reach inner and outer corner lashes
Applied a lighter coat on my lower lashes using whatever product remained on the wand for softer definition
One quick mascara philosophy note: No formula gets a 10/10 from me during its first week of life. Fresh tubes tend to be a little thin, but after about three to five business days of exposure to air, they thicken just enough for peak lash-coating performance. (Ask me if I plan for this before vacations and big events. Spoiler: I do.)
What I appreciated about the Lash Clash brush is that it’s surprisingly adaptable. Whether you’re a swiper, a wiggler, or a layer-until-you-achieve-mascara-nirvana type (hi, it’s me), it builds volume quickly without clumping.
And yes—my mascara habits, much like my personality, might be a little extra. Think guac at Chipotle levels of extra.
And I’m not sorry.

One eye with the YSL Lash Clash Mascara and one eye with bare lashes.
I wore the mascara for about 10 hours on a typical workday, then again on a barre-workout-to-coffee shop Sunday—because a mascara review deserves real-world testing.
Upon Application: Lashes looked fluffy, lifted, and noticeably darker.
Hour 1: Once the formula fully dried down, I noticed a slight drop in length compared to that just-applied look—but still a clear upgrade from my natural lashes.
Hour 6: Volume held up nicely and my sensitive eyes didn’t have any burning or itching sensations all day.
End of day: Nary a flake in sight—and no dreaded under-eye smudging (even after a sweat sesh).
Considering my dry climate and sensitive eyes, that’s a solid performance (while still not coming for my top three current faves.)
Now, I’ll be honest with you: This tube is so gorgeous that I desperately wanted it to earn a permanent spot on my proverbial beauty étagère. This is the part in the story where a soft violin starts playing as we wander down a cobblestone Parisian street—imagine something out of a Van Gogh painting—and the narrative takes a slightly sad turn.
Because finding the right mascara for your lashes is a lot like finding a favorite pair of jeans. It takes trial and error, kissing a lot of frogs, and a level of patience that—if we’re being honest—is not one of my core strengths.
The pros first: no smudging, no flaking, and no transfer (the beauty equivalent of spinach in your teeth). At the end of the day, my lashes still looked good—but they didn’t quite outperform my go-to faves, mainly because a bit of that initial length softened once the formula fully dried.
My consensus: love the luxury tube that added glam to my morning, and looks so chic on a vanity. I love this for daytime or looks without eye makeup (where the results felt more obvious), but will stick with my OGs for nighttime, full glam, and to help me lean into my lash-lust goals.
A few things worth knowing before you swipe:
The volume leans bold—but still soft and natural-looking. If you love dramatic lashes, you may find this perfect for everyday wear. For me, it delivered a beautiful daytime lash moment, especially on minimal-makeup days when mascara is doing most of the heavy lifting.
Removal is surprisingly easy. When I washed my face at the end of the day, the formula came off like a dream—no tugging, aggressive scrubbing, or even my usual oil-based cleanser required. My ride-or-die mascaras typically take a bit more effort to remove (which I personally don’t mind), but I know plenty of people will consider this a major win.
My overall takeaway: I love the luxe tube—it adds a little glam to the morning routine and looks incredibly chic on a vanity. The formula also shines on daytime or no-eyeshadow looks, where the lifted, defined lashes feel especially noticeable.
For full glam nights or when I’m chasing my most dramatic lash dreams, I’ll probably still reach for my longtime favorites—but Lash Clash absolutely earns its place as a polished, easy-wearing option for everyday volume.
If you love bold, plush lashes that look like you spent extra time on your makeup—even when you didn’t—the YSL Lash Clash Extreme Volume Mascara absolutely delivers.
Who it’s perfect for: my soft-glam lash girlies. If you want color, length, and volume—but still want your lashes to look like they could be your own—this might be the little black dress of mascaras. Polished, classic, and always appropriate.
If you’re a full-on lash drama queen like me, you might still reach for your ride-or-die formulas for maximum glam. But Lash Clash absolutely earns a spot for lighter makeup days, gym runs, or “no-makeup” makeup moments when you still want lifted, defined lashes.
I’ll also say this: the tube itself is stunning. It adds instant glamour to your vanity, and I would absolutely gift this to friends and family who love a chic, effortless beauty look. (Pro tip: it’s engravable—pair it with a classic YSL red lipstick and you’ve got a very French-girl-approved present.)
And if you’re an IPSY Original subscriber, keep an eye on your April bag—you could score a deluxe sample.
As for me? I’ll definitely keep reaching for it on days when I want my lashes to do the talking.
