Air-Drying Your Hair? Here’s How to Actually Do It Right

Air-drying sounds easy in theory: wash, wait, done. But in practice? It’s rarely that simple.

The truth is, air-drying isn’t one-size-fits-all. What works for pin-straight hair won’t work for curls. What enhances waves might completely flatten finer textures. The difference between effortless, lived-in hair and “what happened?” usually comes down to one thing: working with your texture, not against it.

And lately, with more of us leaning into low-maintenance routines, air-drying is having a moment again. Ahead, exactly how to make it work for your hair type, no guesswork required.

It's about glam time you treated yourself.

MEET THE EXPERT

Kelly Macedo is a Los Angeles-based hairstylist, cut specialist, and air-dry enthusiast.

Why Air-Drying Isn’t One-Size-Fits-All

Air-drying is often framed as the low-effort option, but the best results actually come from being intentional.

Different hair textures dry differently. Straight hair can fall flat. Waves can puff up. Curls can lose definition or shrink unpredictably. Coils can dry unevenly without the right prep. And beyond texture, things like product choice, application technique, and even how often you touch your hair while it dries all play a role.

The goal isn’t to force your hair into a shape it doesn’t want to be; it’s to enhance what’s already there. Once you start thinking about air-drying that way, everything gets easier.

Air-Drying Tips for Straight Hair

With straight hair, the biggest challenge isn’t definition, it’s avoiding flatness.

The key is to add just enough structure without weighing things down. Start with a lightweight leave-in or conditioning spray to keep hair smooth and hydrated without killing movement, like FOXYBAE HAIR California Dreamin' Leave-In Conditioner. “Salt spray and curl cream can bring out any texture, wave, or curl in the hair,” says hairstylist Kelly Macedo—just be sure to use creams in small amounts to avoid weighing the hair down.

From there, subtle shaping makes all the difference. Tucking your hair behind your ears while it dries or loosely braiding the ends can create soft bends without heat. And once it starts drying? Hands off. Over-touching can lead to oil buildup at the roots and flatten everything you just styled.

Air-Drying Tips for Wavy Hair

Wavy hair sits right in the middle, which means it can go either way depending on how you treat it. To bring out your natural bend, you’ll want to strike a balance between hydration and hold. A lightweight curl cream (like DEVA CURL Wave Maker™ Lightweight Moisturizing Definer) or soft gel helps define waves without making them feel crunchy.

Apply your product to damp hair, then scrunch upward to encourage your pattern. Micro-plopping (gently scrunching with a microfiber towel or T-shirt) can help remove excess water without disrupting the wave. “Avoid vigorously rubbing and shaking the moisture out of your hair with a towel,” says Macedo. “This will only add frizz, breakage, and hair shedding.

One rule to stick to: “After that first brush through out of the shower, don’t brush the hair at all during the air-drying process,” Macedo recommends. That’s the fastest way to turn defined waves into frizz.

Air-Drying Tips for Curly Hair

For curls, air-drying is all about moisture and structure. Start with soaking-wet hair, this helps distribute product evenly and encourages better clumping (aka more defined curls). Then layer your products: a leave-in for hydration, a curl cream for softness, and a gel to lock everything in place.

Work in sections if you need to, making sure every strand is coated. From there, let your curls set without too much disruption.

If you’re short on time, a quick diffuse at the roots can help speed things up and maintain shape, but it’s totally optional.

Air-Drying Tips for Coily Hair

Coily textures thrive on intention. Because shrinkage and uneven drying can come into play, sectioning your hair before applying product is key. This ensures every part of your hair gets the moisture and definition it needs.

Richer creams and butters help hydrate and elongate the hair while maintaining softness. For more controlled results, styles like twists or braids can guide your pattern as it dries, giving you stretch, definition, and a more uniform finish.

Final Thoughts

Air-drying isn’t about doing nothing—it’s about doing less, strategically. Once you understand what your texture actually needs, the process becomes easier, faster, and way more predictable. No fighting your hair. No overcomplicating your routine.

Just better, more effortless results—exactly how your hair wants to show up.
